« Who the fuck is Arcade Fire ? », pouvait-on lire, hier, sur les t-shirts vendus au kiosque à souvenirs du Métropolis, où Arcade Fire a fait salle archi-comble dans le cadre de sa prestation au festival Pop Montréal.

Ce t-shirt au slogan férocement cynique, c’est, évidemment, un dérivé de la réaction de milliers d’internautes en février dernier, lorsque le collectif avait remporté à quelques jours d’intervalle le Grammy du meilleur album de l’année et le Brit Awards remis au meilleur disque international.
En revanche, dans la salle de la rue Sainte-Catherine qui affichait son ambiance des grands soirs, tout le monde connaissait par cœur l’oeuvre du groupe emblématique de Montréal qui offrait un premier spectacle en ville depuis l’obtention de son carré d’as de 2011 (Grammy, Brit Award, Juno et prix Polaris). Ne manque que le Joker… Euh, le Félix, qui va suivre dans quelques semaines, n’en doutez pas.

Un an et des poussières après la mise en marché de l’album The Suburbs qui a mené à ce triomphe planétaire, on pouvait noter à quel point les récentes compositions d’Arcade Fire avaient atteint le statut de classiques de leurs albums précédents.

Dès que le groupe s’est pointé pour amorcer sa performance avec Ready To Start, la foule dense est montée dans le train lancé à vive allure, ne ménageant pas les occasions de battre la mesure et d’interpréter à l’unisson les chants fédérateurs.
Mais ce qui sautait au yeux… pardon, aux oreilles, c’était la qualité sonore d’ensemble d’Arcade Fire et le haut degré de cohésion du groupe que l’on a trop peu eu l’occasion de mesurer à sa juste valeur ces dernières années. Car hier, Arcade Fire, jouait dans une véritable salle de spectacle à Montréal depuis les premières parties de U2 au Centre Bell en 2005. Une éternité.
Le band, fidèle à sa réputation de ne jamais faire les choses comme les autres, nous avait gratifié de prestations dans la sympathique mais cacophonique église de la Fédération ukrainienne ou à la casserole sonore qu’est l’aréna Maurice-Richard.
Enfin ! Pourvoir entendre parfaitement le vibraphone lors de Intervention, l’un des grands moments d’émotion de la soirée… Enfin ! Savourer sans dissonance les mélodies accrocheuses de The Suburbs et Modern Man.. Enfin ! Pouvoir synchroniser avec le jeu de lumière les explosions rythmiques de No Cars Go ! et Month of May… Finalement, on a pu entendre Arcade Fire dans une salle digne de ce nom à Montréal. Hallelujah !, comme dirait Leonard Cohen.
