D’ordinaire, l’élaboration d’une compilation de grands succès ou d’une anthologie signifie deux choses : le groupe est disparu ou séparé depuis longtemps, ou le band s’apprête à repartir en tournée afin de faire rouler son fonds de commerce. Pas R.E.M..

Dans un geste qui aura attristé leurs millions de fans, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck et Mike Mills ont décidé il y a quelques jours de mettre un terme à une aventure musicale d’une durée de 31 ans, bien plus longue que la plupart des mariages.

La mise à mort officielle s’est, semble-t-il, faite de la façon la plus civilisée qui soit à en juger par les commentaires des trois amis de longue date au sein de leur site web.

Pour plusieurs, R.E.M. a été un groupe qui su demeurer fidèle à ses racines alternatives en dépit d’une évolution musicale pop évidente et d’une reconnaissance mondiale acquise sur le tard. Dans le fond, R.E.M. n’était-il pas Arcade Fire bien avant la lettre ?

Que l’on se souvienne que R.E.M. n’a pas orchestré de tournée d’importance après les parutions de Out of Time (Losing My Religion, Shiny Happy People) et Automatic For the People (Drive, Man On the Moon, Everybody Hurts), leurs plus grands succès commerciaux. Les deux disques ont cumulé des ventes de quelque 25 millions d’exemplaires. On n’ose imaginer ce que des tournées mondiales auraient généré comme revenus. Dans la catégorie des groupes qui ont fait de la musique pour l’art bien avant de penser à leur portefeuille, R.E.M. figure encore parmi les premiers de classe.

La décision annoncée par le trio le 21 septembre dernier semblait toutefois inévitable.

R.E.M. n’a aucunement fait de mauvais disques par la suite. Mauvais est d’ailleurs un qualificatif qui n’a pas sa place dans leur œuvre. Sur ce plan, l’anthologie Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982-2011 attendue en novembre sera nécessaire, parce qu’elle combinera enfin les catalogues de I.R.S. et Warner.

Mais en rétrospective, force est d’admettre qu’après le départ de Berry, s’il y a eu de bons albums et très bonnes chansons, il n’y a eu aucun disque essentiel comme Murmur, aucune chanson vitale et universelle comme Everybody Hurts.

Je doute qu’il faille en incomber la faute – ou le mérite – au batteur démissionnaire, mais R.E.M., figure incontournable de la musique alternative et populaire durant 15 ans, n’arrivait plus à nous remuer les entrailles et à nous chavirer le cœur depuis longtemps.

Stripe, Buck et Mills, à qui l’on doit le respect le plus absolu, l’ont simplement réalisé bien après plusieurs d’entre nous.
