L’amour, le thème le plus universel qui soit, peut s’exprimer de diverses façons. Jean-Marc Vallée en a choisi deux pour illustrer la trame narrative de Café de Flore : celui, exclusif, maternel et quelque peu excessif d’une mère pour son fils trisomique, et celui, perdu et inoubliable d’un homme pour un amour d’adolescent qui devait durer toute une vie.

Le réalisateur de C.R.A.Z.Y., qui agit ici à titre de scénariste et réalisateur, brosse le portrait d’une mère protectrice (Vanessa Paradis, Jacqueline) et d’un DJ de classe internationale fragile (Kevin Parent, Antoine) dans des pays et des espace-temps différents : Paradis, dans le Paris du tournant des années 1960-70 ; Parent, dans le Québec d’aujourd’hui.
Pendant longtemps, hormis la mélodie récurrente de la pièce musicale Café de Flore, on ne saisi guère le lien qui unit ces deux univers si distincts, outre cette notion d’amour éternel qui gère les émotions de nombre de protagonistes.
Mais l’amour n’a pas de patrie. Ni de paramètres définis par le temps, le rêve et l’espace. Vallée bâti lentement les ponts pas évidents entre les deux mondes – quoique de façon boiteuse à la mi-parcours avec un montage un tantinet chaotique – afin d’accoucher à l’arrivée d’un film touchant qui mérite pleinement le synonyme d’œuvre cinématographique, mais qui est bien moins rassembleur que C.R.A.Z.Y..

Parent et Paradis
Paradis, qui joue sans fard – au sens propre et figuré -, transcende sa portion de film avec des nuances impeccables et une détermination jamais démentie. Parent, peu bavard, s’en tire très bien dans le rôle d’Antoine qui lui colle à la peau comme un tatouage, soit celui d’un artiste troublé.
Comme Vanessa Paradis l’avait fait à ses débuts au cinéma avec Noces blanches, Parent transpose essentiellement sa propre personnalité à l’écran. Ça facilite le travail, certes, mais ça n’amenuise pas une seconde son apport dans ce long-métrage où les relations inter-personnelles sont la charpente sur laquelle tout repose.
Evelyne Brochu est aussi criante de vérité en nouvelle flamme d’Antoine, soit plus qu’Hélène Florent, dont le jeu est parfois un peu trop appuyé, dans son rôle d’ex.
Photographie bien adaptée selon le contexte particulier des deux rives, ambiance atmosphérique, ainsi que musique rythmée et enveloppante sont le lot de ce film qui demande un degré d’attention considérable, mais qui ne déçoit pas en finale, même si cette dernière tient presque du happy ending. Quoique… Est-ce vraiment un happy ending?
